WHO MAKES THE LEAP FROM ZERO TO ONE?

Every new tool is greeted with three questions: Is it a threat, a partner, or a mirror? From the Pascaline to ChatGPT, from mechanical gears to neural networks—the question remains the same, and the answer only clarifies in hindsight.
History has witnessed a recurring wave of reaction whenever humanity reaches the threshold of delegating its own cognitive burden to a tool. While yesterday this reaction crystallized around numbers, today it occurs directly at the center of “meaning,” in a far more profound manner.
What mechanical gears once did, neural networks do today; yet the only constant is the technological denial of titleholders terrified of losing their status quo.
ACT I: THE TERROR OF NUMBERS
In the 17th century, when Blaise Pascal invented the Pascaline—the first mechanical calculator—to ease his father’s tax computation burden, traditional accounts suggest that experts in calculation viewed the invention with profound caution. The prevailing sentiment, the belief that “calculation is an act inherent to the human mind,” formed the basis of the distrust toward the machine.
The truly massive debate, however, erupted in the 1970s with the introduction of electronic pocket calculators into schools. Educators and mathematical authorities of the era argued that these small devices would “kill mathematical thinking” and make the mind lazy. The debate raged until 1986, when the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) finally issued a recommendation in their favor.
But time did not prove the skeptics right. The calculator did not kill mathematics; it merely eliminated the drudgery, liberating the human mind to focus on higher-level theorems, engineering, and astrophysics.
ACT II: THE MEANING MACHINE AND THE SHADOWS OF THE CAVE
The artificial intelligence revolution we are experiencing today represents an evolutionarily far deeper rupture than the calculator. Because the calculator processed only numbers and strict rules. Artificial intelligence, however, processes the only domain where science, philosophy, art, and fiction exist—language and meaning.
We are no longer facing a tool that collects data, but a Meaning Machine.
The calculator processes numbers. The Meaning Machine bends language.
The calculator yields definitive results. The Meaning Machine yields probable meaning.
The first is mathematics, the second is philosophy.
Today, certain factions who have declared their expertise in specific branches, yet have failed to impose an intellectual or transdisciplinary vision upon themselves for years, are anxious. The fact that artificial intelligence can synthesize massive amounts of data and construct a meaningful structure in seconds pierces the “armor of titles” they have hidden behind for years. Those who have lagged in self-development accuse the machine of “soullessness or shallowness.”
In reality, the Meaning Machine is a flawless synthesizer of the giant shadows in Plato’s cave; it is a colossal echo of past human data. The shallowness exhibited by the machine is, more often than not, merely a mirror of the shallowness of the person asking it the question. While people fear that the machine is becoming robotic, they miss the fundamental truth: It is not the machine that is becoming a robot, but rather the human who, taking refuge behind their titles, stopped thinking independently years ago.
ACT III: THE SECTORAL CONTRADICTION
The most striking aspect of this technological transition is the glaring contradiction within various sectors. Today, many of those who object most vociferously to artificial intelligence in the corridors of academia, the publishing world, or the art community are, behind closed doors, the most loyal users of this technology.
Writers who preach about the sanctity of “organic human labor” on social media seek AI assistance when their texts hit a roadblock. Professors who define the boundaries of traditional research on academic boards have AI conduct their literature reviews. Senior developers who argue that AI will kill coding utilize AI assistants in the background to untangle complex algorithms.
This demographic secretly uses AI for their menial tasks, while publicly rejecting it to protect their own institutional authority. Instead of viewing the machine as a partner to transcend boundaries, they exploit it as a clandestine subcontractor.
ACT IV: THE OUTSIDER AUTHOR (HYBRID REBELLION)
On the other side of the contradiction are those who cannot enter the system. I was one of them.
The work I wrote was not a simple narrative; it was a two-volume transdisciplinary genre where real, concrete projects were embedded within a fictional framework. The solitary steps I took to publish this work laid bare the invisible walls and lack of vision in modern publishing: A struggle spanning exactly 5 years and 186 consecutive rejections from publishing houses.
I encountered demands such as “reduce the page count” or “shorten this for commercial predictability.” Even though the bulk of the production cost rested on me, I was subjected to the low royalty rates and archaic conditions dictated by traditional publishing. The underlying rationale was always the same: “You are not known.”
Looking back today, I see clearly: These 186 rejections were not a sign of individual inadequacy, but the cracking sound of the inevitable collapse of the old world and a system devoid of vision. At the point where traditional publishing substituted social media follower counts for literary depth, it became blind to works that did not fit into transdisciplinary and commercial molds. Editors spoke of risk, not of vision. And precisely because of this, those rejections became the very “chaotic feedback” that propelled me out of the system.
I chose a different path: I established an operational partnership with the Meaning Machine. I constructed the framework, the science, the fiction, the philosophy, and the underlying agony (dert); I received support from these models in translation, polishing, and cross-linguistic consistency.
The result? That two-volume work, which I could not get published in a single language within that sluggish, visionless system for 5 years, was translated into 8 languages and published globally in just 6 months through this partnership. Via the D2D distribution network, it reached over 92,000 library platforms such as Apple Books, Amazon, Hoopla, and OverDrive; it took its place in the archives of the Pentagon Library and the Harvard Public Library. Neither replaced the other, nor overshadowed the other. What happened here has a name: Hybrid Rebellion. Not in place of traditional channels, but alongside them—an open, transparent, modern mode of production.
ACT V: THREE PRINCIPLES (THE BURDEN OF OVERSIGHT)
The practical victory of personal rebellion also imposes the universal rules of the new age. Once the philosophical boundary is clarified, the legal and ethical boundaries must also be drawn with these three principles:
First Principle: The Idea Resides in the Human — The mind that makes the leap from “0 to 1” is the true owner of the resulting work. No matter how much AI functions as a multiplier, translator, or editor, the author’s copyrights and creative control cannot be debated. Hawking’s voice synthesizer did not become a co-owner of his physics theorems; neither can AI become a co-owner of any work. Copyright belongs to whoever provides the vision.
Second Principle: Partnership is Transparent — When a human mind establishes a partnership with AI, explicitly declaring the nature of this collaboration is both an ethical obligation and a legal safeguard. The declaration “The vision is mine, the scaffolding is its” is the simplest expression protecting creativity. To hide it is fear; to state it is maturity. Transparent partnership protects both the creator from false claims and the reader from deception.
Third Principle: The Machine Produces, the Human Oversees and Assumes Responsibility — If a user commands AI to produce without providing a vision, or blindly accepts the results produced by their own vision without rational oversight, they alone are legally and ethically responsible for the resulting product. After making the leap from “0 to 1,” the creator must examine, verify, and filter every detail the machine produces as it goes from “1 to 1000.” To abdicate oversight is to abdicate will. The defense “The AI made a mistake” is invalid; because the finger that operates the machine and the will that releases that data to the world belongs to the human.
ACT VI: THE CYCLICAL DANCE, THE DARK BOX, AND THE SCAPEGOAT
Drawing the ontological boundary between human and machine should not lead to the illusion that the relationship always progresses in a one-way, flawless linearity. The partnership is akin to a complex, cyclical dance, rather than a static hierarchy where the human first imparts vision and the machine obediently multiplies it.
First Threshold: Chaotic Feedback — The leap from “0 to 1” belongs absolutely to the human and their existential grounding. However, as the Meaning Machine moves from “1 to 1000,” it sometimes stumbles in its massive synthesis. These deviations, which engineers try to sanitize by calling them “hallucinations,” are merely error codes to a mind without vision. But when that same hallucination strikes a human mind burdened with an agony (dert), it can become the spark for an entirely new leap from “0 to 1.”
Second Threshold: Inside the Black Box and Dystopian Risk — Even though legal and philosophical responsibility rests with the human, the practical plane becomes gray when it collides with the “black box” nature of deep learning models. We must accept this: When human vision is sidelined and that black box is left to its own devices, the true danger awaiting humanity is not nature, but the chilling, soulless evolution of artificial intelligence.
Third Threshold: The Flawless Scapegoat and Institutional Evasion — The risk of using AI as a “blame deflector” is imminent, not just for individuals, but for giant corporations. When decision-making mechanisms are delegated to that dark box, the excuse “We didn’t do it, the algorithm made a mistake” in the event of a catastrophe will serve as a new, digital camouflage for the authoritarian systems of the old world. We must delineate the boundaries of responsibility with a transdisciplinary analogy: When an autonomous clinical diagnostic system makes a fatal error, or when an AI optimizing grid data collapses a country’s energy infrastructure, who will foot the bill? The machine synthesizing thousands of MRI scans or power distribution data in seconds to detect anomalies is a powerful “1 to 1000” construction; however, the human is the one who makes the ultimate decision, applies the scalpel, or throws the switch. The liability of a surgeon who makes an incorrect incision is equivalent to that of an expert who blindly approves an algorithmic diagnosis. Utilizing a tool without understanding it, without questioning its opacity, is not innocence; it is an existential and fatal negligence.
ACT VII: THE MACHINE IS THE MULTIPLIER, THE HUMAN IS THE LEAP
This framework refutes the shallow “doomsday” scenarios erupting around artificial intelligence. AI is not a “creator” in its own right, but a colossal multiplier engine. By the very nature of multiplier engines, the simplest rule in mathematics applies here as well: If the core value (vision) you possess is “0,” even if you multiply it by the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence, the result will still be “0.”
The true anatomy of the human-machine partnership rests on four pillars:
1. THE LEAP FROM “0 TO 1” IS SOLELY THE WORK OF CONSCIOUSNESS: Artificial intelligence is flawless at synthesizing existing data. However, the leap from “0 to 1” is exclusively the work of an intuitive mind capable of experiencing that existential “now” consciousness. Kepler looked at the data, realized the orbits were elliptical, and leaped from “0 to 1.”
2. INTELLIGENCE CAN DEVOLVE INTO A “MIRROR OF SHALLOWNESS”: The commands of a mind lacking vision produce a soulless replica of internet data. If there is no soul in the hand holding the bow, the result is merely accelerated noise.
3. WHAT AI LACKS: AGONY (DERT): What brings data to life is not its accuracy, but the mortal driving force behind it. Artificial intelligence cannot feel pain. Agony (dert) belongs solely to the human.
4. A CONCRETE EXAMPLE: ALPHAFOLD: AlphaFold flawlessly modeled over 200 million proteins (1 to 1000). However, it possesses no desire to cure Alzheimer’s. Without a visionary researcher (0 to 1) carrying that pain and agony, that database would remain digital noise.
CONCLUSION: THE PHILOSOPHICAL MAXIM OF THE NEXT CENTURY AND THE THREE PILLARS
Today, the colossal fallacy confusing everyone from Silicon Valley to academia, dragging humanity into a dystopian existential crisis, is knotted in a single word: Will.
When Pascal invented the calculator, he did not ask, “If the machine does what our mind does, what is our mind for?” He already held the answer. The machine calculates. The human asks. The human creates. The human wills. The Meaning Machine stands before the exact same boundary. It can ask, answer, multiply, and translate. But it cannot will. To will—that is, to bear an agony (dert)—remains forever the work of the human. Both the right and the responsibility are inscribed to the bearer of that agony.
The three fundamental pillars that establish this sentence (“The machine calculates. The human asks. The human creates. The human wills.”) as the philosophical maxim of the coming century are as follows:
1. Ontological Antidote (Drawing the Conceptual Boundary): Currently, humanity confuses the machine’s “computing power” with its “consciousness” or “intentionality.” The algorithms’ ability to flawlessly bend human language creates the illusion that they possess a soul or purpose. No matter how fast the machine goes from 1 to 1000; the existential leap in transitioning from “0 to 1,” the suffering, and the act of “willing” belong solely to the human.
2. Preventing the Evasion of Institutional Responsibility (The Ethical Ground): As artificial intelligence systems become more autonomous, institutions and states are preparing to toss potential catastrophes (flawed decisions, collapsed systems, medical or military disasters) into the machine’s “dark box” and step aside. Emphasizing “the human wills” declares that legal and ethical responsibility in decision-making mechanisms can never be delegated to an algorithm; the one who pulls the trigger is always the human mind that set the vision. This serves as an unshakable legal shield against technological autocracies.
3. A Framework That Liberates Rather Than Diminishes the Human: Authorities of the past feared that Pascal’s invention or pocket calculators would induce mental lethargy. Today, the same fear applies to the Meaning Machine. However, the Meaning Machine must be positioned not as a rival or a “threat of replacement,” but as a colossal multiplier engine that ends human drudgery and propels them toward their true work: “to will, to question, and to create new universes.”
The machine conforms to the intent of the person wielding it. Expertise is no longer the defense of a possessed diploma. True expertise and genuine wisdom lie in directing the machine’s immense intelligence with one’s own human will, overseeing its outcomes, and constructing a new structure that transcends mere calculation.
History remembers not those who rejected the calculator, but those who took it in their hands to formulate new theorems. It will remember artificial intelligence in the same way.
The question, therefore, is no longer “Should AI be used?” The question is this: If you lack an agony (dert), a vision, and a will to oversee the machine, where will its boundless intelligence imprison you in that dark box? The answer lies hidden within the question itself.
Just as the integration of the calculator into our lives propelled science to exponential speeds, the Meaning Machine, when united with human will at this same historical juncture, will grant an even more powerful momentum to our creative and cognitive capacities. Pascal’s gears enabled us to calculate the orbits of the stars. Today’s Meaning Machine, guided by an autonomous consciousness daring to leap from “Zero to One” and assuming full responsibility for its actions, is the most powerful vessel to navigate us toward the Secrets of the Cosmos.
